Gray Swan's Statement on SB-1047 and Our Founding Team

Key points about Gray Swan's position on SB-1047 and updates on our founding team.

At Gray Swan we are devoted to building products and services that address the AI security needs of companies and other organizations.  Our founding team and advisors are experts in the space, and our advisors in particular have ongoing efforts both inside and outside the company.  Because one of our advisors, Dan Hendrycks, has been associated with the SB-1047 bill currently proposed in California, we believe it is necessary to address certain key points.

Gray Swan, very explicitly, does not hold any position on SB-1047.  Our products and services are not and will not be designed to satisfy any of the auditing requirements proposed in the bill.  While both SB-1047 and Gray Swan focus on the safety and security of AI systems, they look at very different aspects of the problem. Gray Swan aims to build products that are useful to all AI developers—regardless of their size and scale—so that they can effectively improve the reliability and security of their AI offerings.  One of our central goals is to promote foundational research in the space. We routinely make our innovations available, release libraries, and provide models to the community.

We are not and will not be an AI compliance auditing company, and our business model is independent from the provisions of the bill.  While we do not discourage individual employees from sharing their own views on the topic, they do not represent the views of the company nor necessarily the views of other employees.

However, to avoid even the appearance of a financial conflict, Dan Hendrycks has decided to divest his entire financial stake in Gray Swan, and will bring his expertise and experience to the company as an unpaid advisor without equity. We look forward to his continued contributions to our products and services in this role, and to the exciting things to come from our entire team.
